How to Simplify a Busy Schedule by Aligning With God's Priorities
Sep 10, 2026There are seasons when you look at your calendar and wonder how everything is possibly going to fit.
Work is demanding more. Your children need you. There are responsibilities at home, commitments you've made, relationships you want to nurture, goals you're pursuing, and maybe even something new God has placed on your heart. Before long, the thought creeps in: If I just had more time, I could handle all of this.
But what if you don't need more time?
What if simplifying your schedule isn't primarily about removing things from your calendar? What if it's about making sure the things taking up your time actually belong there?
A Full Schedule Isn't Always a Misaligned Schedule
We often associate a full calendar with overwhelm. And sometimes that's absolutely true. We can fill our schedules with responsibilities God never asked us to carry, say yes because we don't want to disappoint someone, or spend valuable time distracted by things that have nothing to do with where God is leading us.
But full and misaligned aren't synonymous.
There are also seasons when God places a lot in our hands. The schedule may look full from the outside, but the things filling it are connected to our assignment.
That's an important distinction.
Isaiah 40 reminds us that even the young become weak and tired, but those who trust in the Lord find new strength. Our confidence isn't supposed to come from our ability to manage everything perfectly. It comes from trusting the One who gave us the assignment in the first place.
Simplifying, then, isn't necessarily about creating an empty calendar. It's about creating an aligned one.
Stop Asking for More Time
I've caught myself wishing there were more hours in the day. Maybe you have too.
But there are 24 hours because that's how God designed the day. The issue isn't that God forgot to give us enough time to accomplish everything we're supposed to do. We have to become intentional about what we're allowing to consume the time He has given us.
And some of those things don't look particularly harmful.
You pick up your phone to handle one notification. Then you notice an email. You respond to that and see a social media message. You open the app to answer it, and suddenly you're scrolling. Fifteen minutes disappeared without you ever deciding to spend them that way.
That's why simplifying our schedules requires more than reorganizing our calendars. We have to pay attention to what is consuming our attention.
Start With Who You Are
Before you start deleting appointments, buying another planner, or creating a new color-coded calendar system, reset your focus.
Who are you? And whose are you?
Your identity shapes how you make decisions. When you're secure in who you are in Christ, you don't have to build your schedule around proving your value, meeting everyone's expectations, or earning approval. You can build it around obedience.
That gives you the freedom to ask a completely different set of questions.
Instead of “Can I fit this in?” ask, “Does this belong?”
Instead of “Will they be upset if I say no?” ask, “Is God asking me to say yes?”
Instead of “Is this a good opportunity?” ask, “Is this aligned with my assignment in this season?”
Those questions help us move from simply managing busyness to stewarding our time.
Know What Season You're In
One of the most important questions you can ask yourself is:
What season does God have me in right now?
There are seasons when you're operating from overflow and have the capacity to pour into others. There are also seasons when you need to be poured into yourself.
Neither makes you more or less faithful.
There may be a season when God is calling you to build, create, lead, serve, or carry more. There may be another when obedience looks like resting, healing, receiving, and allowing Him to replenish you.
The mistake comes when we expect every season to have the same capacity.
In this week's podcast episode, I share about a previous season when circumstances outside of my control required me to physically rest and receive. I didn't stop trusting God or walking in obedience; obedience simply looked different in that season. That time of being poured into helped create the overflow I can pour from now.
That's why you can't determine what belongs on your schedule without first understanding the season you're in.
Four Questions to Ask Before Your Next Yes
Before committing to something else, give yourself space for a real spirit check. Ask yourself:
- What season does God have me in right now?
- Am I operating from overflow, or am I in a season of being filled?
- Is this filling me, part of my assignment, or simply distracting me?
- How well does this align with what God has revealed to me in this season?
And then be willing to respond to the answer.
Sometimes an opportunity will be genuinely good—and still require a no.
Something good in the wrong season is still misalignment. And when we continually say yes to things that don't belong in our season, we shouldn't be surprised when frustration, exhaustion, and overwhelm follow.
Your no doesn't always require an explanation, either. Knowing what God has called you to in this season gives you the confidence to protect it.
Your Goal Isn't an Empty Plate
I don't want you to walk away from this believing that peace is found in having nothing to do.
The goal isn't an empty plate. The goal is an obedient one.
When you know God placed something in your hands, you can approach it differently. You can stop relying exclusively on your own strength and trust Him for what you need to accomplish the assignment.
And when something isn't yours to carry, you can release it without allowing guilt, comparison, or someone else's expectations to convince you to pick it back up.
That's how we begin creating sustainable rhythms. We aren't simply arranging our schedules so we can survive another busy week. We're learning to make intentional decisions about our time from a place of identity, obedience, and trust.
This Week's Assignment
Take some quiet time this week and read Isaiah 40 in its entirety.
Then look at your calendar—not with the goal of immediately cutting things out, but with the goal of seeking alignment.
Ask God:
What have You placed in my hands in this season? What have I picked up that You never asked me to carry? And where have I allowed distractions to consume time You intended me to steward differently?
Be willing to sit with His answer.
Because maybe you don't need more time.
Maybe you need greater clarity about what deserves the time you've already been given.
