Know Who God Says You Are but Still Just Surviving? 5 Ways to Stop Living Reactive

Oct 29, 2026

Most of us could recite what God says about who we are. We've sat through the sermons, highlighted the verses, maybe even taught them to our kids. Then Monday shows up: the morning rush, back-to-back meetings, the group chat, the deadline that moved up, the laundry that never ends. Before lunch we're running on reflex instead of truth. If you've ever finished a day and thought, "I believe all of it, so why doesn't my life reflect it?", you're not alone, and you're not failing.

That gap between believing and living is what my new book, Destiny Decisions, is about. Information usually isn't what's missing. Most of us already know what peace and alignment look like on paper. What's missing is the choice to act on what we know. James 1:22 puts it plainly: "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves" (ESV).

When I say Destiny Decision, I mean a choice you make from who God says you are, rather than one that pressure, fear, or someone else's expectations make for you. It can be a big turning point, but more often it's an ordinary choice on an ordinary Tuesday. Here are five practical ways to start.

1. Name the gap between what you know and how you're living

Drifting off course rarely happens in one dramatic moment. It happens in small, quiet choices that add up. So begin by being honest about one area where your beliefs and your habits don't line up yet. Grab a sticky note or your journal and finish this sentence: "I believe God's Word says ______, but I'm not living it yet in ______." Maybe you believe His peace holds steady no matter what, yet your whole mood swings on one tense email. Naming that gap isn't about guilt. It gives you a clear place to start.

2. Catch the choices you make on reflex

Some of the choices that shape your days barely register as choices, because you make them on reflex. Think about the first thing you reach for when you wake up, the meeting invite you accept without reading, the favor you agree to before the person finishes asking, or the way you react when plans fall apart. Choose one of those. That's your practice decision for the week. You don't need a new system; you need one repeated habit you stop handing over to reflex.

3. Notice what you're listening to

Every decision has a soundtrack. Sometimes it's urgency; sometimes it's guilt, comparison, a coworker's disappointment, or the fear of being seen as someone who can't keep up. Whatever plays the loudest tends to steer. Before your next decision, big or small, stop and ask, "What am I actually listening to right now?" If the answer isn't God's truth, you've found what has been steering.

4. Put one question between the moment and your response

Ephesians 5:15–17 calls us to "look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time" (ESV). That isn't a call to slow down or do less. It's a call to move with intention rather than on impulse. A simple way to practice it is to build in a single question before you respond: "Who does God say I am right here?" Let the answer shape your next move. Romans 12:2 tells us that discerning God's will flows from a renewed mind, so the more His Word fills your thinking, the easier this question becomes.

5. When nothing changes, check where you're choosing from

There will be seasons when nothing about your circumstances budges, and the choice in front of you looks identical either way. What makes the difference is the place you're choosing from. Is it fear, pressure, or pain, or is it what God says about you and about Himself? Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you" (John 14:27, ESV). The world's version of peace needs everything to go right. His holds even when things go wrong. In this week's episode I share the season that taught me this most deeply. Choosing His peace didn't take my grief away, but it changed how I carried it.

And if you've been out of step for a while, take heart. You don't need a perfect track record to get back in line with God's Word. Your very next choice is a fresh starting point.

Your Destiny Decision this week

Choose one reflex decision from tip 2. Before you make it this week, pause and ask, "Who does God say I am right here?" Let that answer lead, and declare this month's Destiny Decision as you do:

"Urgency doesn't get to decide how I live. Who God says I am does."

Go deeper with Destiny Decisions
